Recommendations Coming Out Of The GM Meetings

via Elliotte Friedman tweets,

Recommendations coming to competition committee and BoG include: moving hash marks back on faceoff circle, switching ends before OT...

There was also discussion on allowing more "kicked-in" or "directed-in" goals, but more work must still be done on that to clarify.

added 4:28pm, from the CP at CBC,

NHL general managers have agreed to make only a few rule-change recommendations to the competition committee after reaching a consensus to alter overtime and faceoffs.

Pending approval from that committee and the board of governors, teams will switch ends at the start of overtime to make for longer line changes.

As expected, there was not enough support to add any three-on-three or extra time to overtime.

Faceoffs could look much different, with GMs agreeing to try making centres who violate rules move 12-to-18 inches back instead of being kicked out of the circle.

A second violation would remain a two-minute minor penalty.

Please define distinct kicking motion better. That is all I really want out of the GM meetings. Clean up the exisitng rules first and foremost.

I am not at all enthused about allowing kicking or more liberal skate blade guiding pucks into net.  Again, a tweak if not gimmick that avoids the REAL problem of XL goalies.

@ RockWestfall711 —

Okay, how about if players are allowed to kick XL goalies in the crotch and then shoot?

Butterfly that, Giguere!  wink

All I want is for them to get rid of the damn trapezoid. It’s the worst rule, has added far more injuries than goals to the game and since it’s been in practice I have yet to hear one person justify it’s continued existence. It does nothing positive. In fact, it takes one of the more entertaining plays out of the game when a goalie in the corner turns it over and has to skate and dive back into goal. The players union wants it gone. Obviously either the league or the GMs think this rule is good. I just don’t get it and still have not heard anyone come out and say they like it. So get rid of it already. Failed experiment.

The trapezoid probably had the exact opposite affect that they wanted. It now keeps the keepers closer to the net and in a better position to stop the hard dump ins around the boards. You would think the last place they wnat the goaltender to play the puck is behind the net because it creates more traffic and injuries and less goal scoring.
