Recap Of The BOG Meetings

from the CP at TSN,

The salary cap is going up and business is booming, but still the NHL often gets the most attention for ugly stuff that happens on the ice.

Ugly was front and centre Saturday night during the Boston Bruins-Pittsburgh Penguins game that led to two suspensions and three players on the injured list. But instead of expressing concern over Shawn Thornton and James Neal, the league's board of governors gave vice-president of player safety Brendan Shanahan a thumbs up for his handling of discipline.

"I believe the sense of the room is that Brendan Shanahan and the department of player safety has the confidence of the board of governors. He certainly has my confidence," commissioner Gary Bettman said. "It's about modifying an element of the game's culture and we think we've made positive, dramatic steps forward."

Gary Bettman said. “It’s about modifying an element of the game’s culture and we think we’ve made positive, dramatic steps forward.”

Shanny has held his position now for two and a half years. And he’s handed out ridiculously harsh penalties to some (like Brendan Smith’s five NHL games for inadvertently running into a player). And he’s let a guy like Weber walk after he took Zetterberg’s head in his hand and smashed it into the glass – not once, but twice.

At this point, no one knows what to expect when a player crosses the line. Not the fans. Not the media. And, apparently, not the players because the stuff that went on in the Bruins-Pens game never would have happened if everyone on the ice knew that their actions would be met by swift, severe and predictable action by the League.

I think Shanahan is a great guy. But he sucks at using the power of his position to actually “modifying an element of the game’s culture” that everyone wants to see not just “modified” but eliminated. But it’s no surprise that a delusional garden gnome like Bettman would think that the league has “made positive, dramatic steps forward.”

Bottom line is most hockey fans complain when there’s something to complain about. Pretending that everthing is just fine when every bit of empirical evidence indicates otherwise is lazy fandom at the least.

And complaining about complaining? That’s some real meta shit right there. Please teach us all how to be proper hockey fans since you know so well.
