from Jack Todd at the Montreal Gazette,
It’s an idea whose time has come: a two-week fan vacation from the National Hockey League during the Winter Olympics. Start your holiday Feb. 9, the day of the Opening Ceremonies in Pyeongchang, and don’t return before Feb. 25, the day of the Closing Ceremonies.
This vacation won’t cost you a dime. In fact, you will probably save money. It’s simple: Don’t go to NHL games. Don’t watch the NHL on television. Don’t buy NHL merchandise. Don’t click on the NHL website. For two little weeks out of a lifetime watching the league, go dark on everything NHL.
Don’t think of it as a boycott. It’s just a vacation. The NHL doesn’t want to take an Olympic break? Fine. Let the league play to empty arenas.
Why would you take a break from the NHL? Because Canadians want to see our best men’s hockey players battle for Olympic gold but that opportunity has been taken away from us by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and the 31 billionaires (or billionaire corporations) that hold all the power. Because we’re mad as hell and we aren’t going to take it any more.
