from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,
With the Washington Capitals unlikely to trade potential unrestricted free agent Mike Green, the Toronto Maple Leafs' Franson is the most desirable rental player for contenders seeking a defenseman with offensive know-how.
With 31 points in 52 games, Franson is having his best season. He is 6-5 and a right-hand shot, which adds to his attractiveness.
The Maple Leafs have tried to re-sign Franson, but he likely will test free agency. Franson undoubtedly is looking at Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen's seven-year, $40.25 million contract and thinking he will do as well or better.
The Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks and Tampa Bay Lightning are among the teams looking to upgrade their defense or plug a hole caused by injury.
Other players who could be dealt before the deadline:
2. Center Antoine Vermette (Arizona Coyotes): With a limited number of proven centers available, 6-1 Vermette might be the most desirable forward. He's a two-way center and a top faceoff man, a perfect fit for a team looking to bolster its forward group for the postseason.
