Reaction To Connor McDavid's Injury

04/07/2019 at 9:27am EDT

from Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun,

The Oilers captain was going at full speed while Flames defenceman Mark Giordano tried to force him wide and he lost an edge. MacDavid was down on the ice for several minutes, holding his knee, before being helped off the ice, unable to put any weight at all on the injured leg.

He was placed in a wheelchair and moved to an X-ray room in the Saddledome, where the images came back showing no breaks. They will take a closer look with an MRI and cross their fingers.

“It makes you sick to your stomach,” said teammate Sam Gagner. “You just want everyone to get through that game healthy. Play hard and try and get a win. It was pretty scary.

“Initially, when it happened, he thought — and we all thought — of what happened to Steve Stamkos (missed 45 games with a broken leg after a similar collision in 2013). It makes you sick to your stomach to see your teammate go down like that. We’re just happy it’s not more serious.”
...

“When you see him get hurt like that it stinks, it sucks,” said Draisaitl. “I know it wasn’t necessarily a dirty play, he wasn’t trying to hurt him, but sometimes if you get beat it’s better to pull back. Hopefully he’s OK and it’s not as bad as we expected.”

“(Mcdavid) is probably the best guy on his edges,” added Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. “He doesn’t go down easy. He’s strong on his skates. So for him to go down it’s going to take a pretty high force.”

Giordano was quick to express his regret over what happened.

“I feel terrible,” he said. “I honestly thought I could get that puck when I dove for it. Watching the replay I missed it and my stick kind of trips him. I was trying to (talk to him) right away. He was in a lot of pain there so he wasn’t saying much.”
