Riksman said Monday that he had just one day to opt out of his contract in Europe and notify the Blues he would sign a deal with them and try out for the club in training camp.
“Jarmo Kekalainen sent me a text message, asking if I’m hungry to play in North America,” Riksman said. “I said, ‘Of course I want to take the chance.’”
The signing went a little under the radar because at the time it wasn’t clear what the plans were for the 30-year-old Riksman, whose pro career has bounced around from Sweden to Italy to Finland. But with the Blues deciding not to offer Curtis Sanford a contract — he has since signed with Vancouver — it appears that Riksman will challenge Jason Bacashihua for the Blues’ backup goalie job in September.
