Quick Reaction To The Firing Of Randy Carlyle

01/06/2015 at 9:54am EST

All via Twitter and make sure to click the names for more reaction from some of the tweets... (added 10:04am, I will be adding to this post for the next few hours, additions added after the jump.)

And the Mike Babcock-to-Toronto watch formally begins. Well, picks up momentum.

Coaching change only makes sense if its followed up by changing Kessel-Phaneuf core. Otherwise spinning your wheels.

-Damien Cox

It's the wrong time to appoint a full time head coach unless you truly believe in Peter DeBoer or Dan Bylsma. I'd wait to end of season.

I will say this for Randy Carlyle. In a challenging media market, with huge demands, he was a real pro to deal with. Pretty classy guy.

-Steve Simmons

I don't think I've ever seen a NHL fan base more thrilled at news that their coach was fired than Leafs fans are right now.

-Conor McKenna

Coach always gets it, but this is on #Leafs players just as much. Is it really that difficult to pick up some defensive habits?

-Terry Koshan

I would doubt any major trades will be in Toronto until the real coach is hired. Shanny and group are now on the clock.

-Shawn Simpson

Shanahan looked extremely downcast after joining the team in Winnipeg. Carlyle was not at Mondays practice.

-Lance Hornby

I don't think they make any move till Babcock signs extension. BTW his price just went up.

-Matthew Barnaby

If I'm the Leafs, I don't piss away this lucky start waiting for Babcock. Hire Dan Bylsma now and turn it into a legit playoff spot.

-James Gordon

Anyone else hoping the Red Wings announce Mike Babcock extension today?

-Ian Mendes

Shanahan and Nonis share in decision to fire Carlyle. All players now potential trade targets.

-Darren Dreger

TOR hierarchy to review all coaching options over next couple of days but most likely scenario: Peter Horachek becoming interim head coach.

For now, all options remain open. IMO, No. 1 reason Carlyle not fired in off-season was because TOR didn't see another guy worth 5 yrs/$2M+.

-Bob McKenzie

If Dave Nonis survives what has got to be the coming storm for the Leafs, then his political skills are Grade A.

-Bruce Arthur

Thank God the Leafs gave Carlyle that extension last spring. Seriously, was that not the most unnecessary move in the history of sports????

-David William Naylor

added 10:33am,

Dave Nonis says #leafs management has been discussing Randy Carlyle's firing for "awhile."

-Chris Johnston

added 10:47am,

All indications are Carlyle bought into analytics and knew Leafs had to change the way they play. Problem is he couldn't get them to change.

-Dan Rosen

added 10:52am,

Sportsnet has some Twitter reaction too.

added 11:49am,

If the Leafs are looking for a coach that holds players accountable, and by all means they should be, Babcock has got to be front-runner

-Katie Strang

added 12:08pm,

This team is hiring Mike Babcock. I've stuck the neck out...I'm comfortable w/ the whole torso out there. NO accident he hasn't extended.
