Questions Continue Regarding Terry Trafford’s Death

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

... Terry Trafford was sent home from the Saginaw Spirit in his fourth season in the Ontario Hockey League for what his father calls “disciplinary reasons.” Some have said he was caught on the road smoking marijuana. Others have said he “was partying.”

“They sent him home,” said Roy. “They told him to go home and see your parents and come back next week. Jim (Paliafito, the general manager) called me and said Terry was being sent home to get his head straight.

“I figured he was going back to remake his commitment to the team and finish the season.”

But a second phone call from Paliafito changed everything. He left a message on Terry’s phone. He left a message on Roy’s phone. But Roy had left his cellphone in the car Saturday night.

“Jim said things had changed (in Saginaw). Unbeknownst to us, they didn’t want him back. I didn’t get the message. Terry did — but he didn’t tell me about it. I don’t think he told anybody. He didn’t want us to know. It was just normal on Saturday night but I was surprised he wasn’t watching his teammates play. That wasn’t normal for him.

Really devastating. This seems like one of those legitimate tragedies. Perhaps no one to blame, other than how the team handled the situation.

Definitely a lot of questions still to be answered, but it just seems like a situation that is all-around unfortunate.

Depression is a real demon. Imagine having a singular focus since a relatively young age - being a star at hockey, the best player on your team all the time - and expecting to make it to the NHL. And then you see it slipping away slowly over time. Other guys younger than him getting drafted. Guys he played with for many years getting drafted. To deal with that type of pressure or fear is a lot for anyone, but to do it while already battling depression was obviously too much. Really horrible.
