Pushing For A Deal

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

With considerable push from both owners and players behind the scenes, the NHL and NHL Players’ Association are back at it Wednesday.

The moderates on each side were working the phones all weekend long, sources told ESPN.com, pushing like crazy for both sides to resume talks, back-channelling between owners, agents and players stressing the need to get right back at it in an effort to once and for all end a lockout that should have never lasted this long.

And even then, there’s still no guarantee it’s going to work, although I will maintain that both sides are not that far apart on a deal.

Just who would be in the room was going to be finalized Tuesday by the NHL and NHLPA, with sources indicating the league was leaning towards no owners this time, while the union may still invite players. But sources said federal mediators will be involved again.

Among those working behind the scenes to try and get things back on track has been New York Rangers owner James Dolan and Pittsburgh Penguins owner Ron Burkle, sources said.

I’ll take “What Has LeBrun Been Saying Almost Every Day Since September” for 800, Alex.

If he is wrong, shame on him for being an ultra-Pollyanna, and totally out of his league when it comes to writing about economics and business.

If he is right, the idiocy that runs the NHL is at a level that is nothing short of stunning.

I may be stupid, guillable, naive; however I think there is going to be a deal very shortly.  The NHL only choose to cancel games to Dec. 30 when I was expecting the true drop dead date of Jan. 15th to be the date.

The PA and NHL are brining back the mediators.  I believe they both are starting to put everything on the table and they’ve already done this once for publicity to say hey we tried mediation.  I believe this time they want their services and plan on using them.

The Penguins had a much large group of players at their practice the last couple days.  They can say there is nothing behind it but I’m not buying it.

Dec 31 has 13 games scheduled including the Penguins pimp slapping the Capitals.

Finally let’s get to what is important.  PLAYING HOCKEY!!

These journalists are loving it - not even the pretense of having to write a new article.

Take Fehr and Bettman out of room.  Both sides agree on impartial arbitrator acceptable to both sides (say Bill Clinton)

This will be settled in 24 hours.  Players happy because Bettman gets no credit. Owners happy because Fehr gets no credit.

Bill Clinton is the hero both sides walk away happy.

But would Proskauer Rose or even more so Luntz Global be happy with this scenario?

The PA and NHL are brining back the mediators.

Hopeful HD thinks that since the two sides are so close maybe they both think a mediator coming in and telling them what the concessions each side should make from their current point provides cover for both guys (Bettman and Fehr) to go to their constituencies and say ‘this is as far as we can get’.

Cynical HD thinks that the NHL has agreed to a mediator late to get the players in a room one more time, see if the mediator will shake the NHLPA off of any of their previously inviolate positions, and then use those indications as tool in trying to gain more negotiating ground.
