It started in 1946 with an eager, inexperienced group of athletes getting together in the frigid Moscow winter to chase a makeshift “puck” around a flooded tennis court for hours on end. Within a couple decades, it grew into a world hockey power. Removed from its political undertones, the story of the Russian hockey program is one of the sporting world’s most dramatic success stories of the last century. On Saturday, a group of legendary Russian hockey players and retired NHL greats from around the world will gather in Moscow’s Red Square's brand new outdoor rink – the largest in Europe – to play an exhibition game with both symbolic and practical meaning.continued
