Post-Season Playoff Rankings

from Mark Potash of the Chicago Sun-Times,

... here are my final 2014 Stanley Cup playoff power rankings:

1. Kings — The new gold standard of the salary-cap era NHL. The Kings have won two of the last three Cups and are an amazing 8-1 in series without home-ice advantage in the last three years.

2. Blackhawks — Couldn’t put the hammer down. Subpar defensively. Could barely roll three effective lines let alone four — and still came within inches of winning another Stanley Cup.

3. Sharks — They’ll spend all summer wondering how they let a 3-0 series lead dissipate against the Kings in the first round.

4. Ducks —  This team has talent — and issues.  The No. 1 team in the West, they lost a 3-2 series lead vs. the Kings and were embarrassed in Game 7 at home — falling behind 5-0 in a 6-2 loss.

The hawks came within inches of what exactly? I don’t remember them playing for anything the past two weeks…

Agree with this ranking though I would put the Bruins up near the Ducks/Sharks.

Re: Hawks, both teams and almost all NHL fans regard the WCF as the de-facto SCF. The results of the LAK vs NYR series would support that notion.

Stars will be much improved next year. Unfortunately, so will the Kings. They look like a juggernaut.

Sutter: “During the Olympics, I always thought about this, ‘How are we going to beat Chicago? How are we going to beat Chicago?’ Dean got Gaborik. We were able to put some kids in, go from there.”

The author thought the Flyers had 2 goaltenders in the playoffs? Um, no, they had to use their backup the first 3 games because a Penguin ran over the starter, Mason, in the next to last game of the season giving him a concussion. I still think if Mason plays any of those first 3 games, Flyers win that series.
