Possible Landing Spots For Luongo

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,

It is safe to say there are goaltending concerns in Philadelphia, Florida, Edmonton, Washington, Buffalo, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Calgary, Minnesota and the Islanders — a team whose goalie problems my colleague Jason Botchford wrote about last week in The Province.

You would think, at some point, there have to be takers, given the importance of the position. But then, Luongo’s contract represents a lot of money — and there are always other options.

Here are snapshots of the nine teams mentioned above:

Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers always have issues and they might think they have solved them with Steve Mason, who certainly finished up with solid numbers after coming over from Columbus and being re-signed to an extension. So Mason’s likely their man but if that isn’t high-risk, it’s hard to tell what might be.

The idea that Luongo will calm the goaltending issues in a new city is cute.

HockeyinHD, he’s been consistently solid throughout his career.  He’s had a few hiccups here and there, but most of the talk about his downfall is overblown by the Vancouver media.  Maybe he has his playoff issues, but he could definitely get some of those teams to that point.

From the article:

St. Louis Blues

The St. Louis Blues have three goaltenders in Jaroslav Halak, Brian Elliott and Jake Allen but, the question is, do they have one? Elliott got the call in the playoffs and finished with a 1.90 GAA and .919 save percentage, which was fine, but the 2-4 won-lost record sucked.

Really, Gallagher?  He could have easily mentioned Elliot’s regular season struggles, but he didn’t.  He only mentioned his sterling playoff numbers and then just says “but his record sucks.”  Clearly a it wasn’t the G’s fault given the numbers.

So what?  He “gets them there” and then chokes.  What team wouldn’t want that?

Pile that on top of his cap hit and it’s a fail all around.
