"The pressure in your marketplace to have your payroll start with a 'four' is tremendous," Anaheim Ducks general manager Brian Burke says. "It doesn't matter what market you are in. The media and fans, say, 'OK, maybe you can't spend $44 million, but you can spend $40 million.' " NHL Players Association executive director Ted Saskin says opening-day payrolls are up 19% from last season, the highest increase in 15 years. He views the spending as a positive for the league.
