Pittsburgh/Florida Trade

from the Pittsburgh Penguins,

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Mike Matheson and forward Colton Sceviour (SEE-vee-yuhr) from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Patric Hornqvist, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

Matheson is signed through the 2025-26 season and his contract carries an average annual value of $4.875 million. Sceviour's deal runs through the 2020-21 campaign and carries an average annual value of $1.2 million.

"First, this was a difficult decision to say goodbye to a terrific person and player in Patric," said Rutherford. "He was a huge part of our success over the last six seasons, including back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, and we wish him nothing but the best.

"Mike is a young, skilled defenseman with great offensive instincts who plays with speed and has a good shot, while Colton is a solid veteran player who has a lot of experience on the penalty kill."

When this was reported to have nearly gone through
before hitting a snag, I’ve scarcely seen so many fans of one team
let loose a collective primal scream.

I’d thought of Matheson as part of them problem on defense for Florida
and a guy they were hoping to dump after he was signed to a loooong
contract.

I guess Hornquist was not going to be part of their top six.

Maybe trading a goalie will get a forward back.
Who knows.

At least Rutherford didn’t trade another pick.

Wings should be dangling Abdelkader in front of Jim Rutherford…

Great trade for Panthers. Unload an overpaid player who once signed to a big contract seemed to decline in talent. Colton Sceviour is a good 4TH line player who kills penalties and always gives 100% effort for every shift but if that was what it took to get rid of Matheson so be it. Panthers need the grit of Hornqvist who gets in the blue paint and the opposing goalie… Rutherford probably thinks Matheson will replace Shultz but unlike Shultz, Matheson gives the puck up quite a bit. Maybe a change of scenery will help Matheson. Defense takes longer to master than the forward position so Matheson still has potential but that is a lot of money for potential.
