Pierre McGuire Changed The Hockey Analyst Role

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,
Somehow it doesn’t seem like a hockey season without Pierre McGuire. McGuire is alive and thriving on NBC and Versus, of course, but the man who made “active sticks” a household phrase is seldom heard in Canada these days on TV. How you feel about that can range from nostalgia to relief, but there’s little doubt McGuire, a former coach in Hartford and Pittsburgh, changed the role of analyst from his perch between the benches.
McGuire tirelessly explored the coaching strategy, relayed by-play between benches from his spot at ice level, and soldiered on against some of the hammerhead tendencies in the game.

If by “Changed The Hockey Analyst Role” you mean “Made it Super Creepy,” you’re absolutely right.

Oh my facking god.
“Mark Lewis is a terrific player. Played midget hockey for the North Creek Walrus, with a great minor hockey program run by Bill Armstrong, who never played in the big leagues….former Detroit Freeze, Plymouth Whaler, Toledo Walleye, Florida Everblade, Syracuse Crunch, and Toronto Maple Leaf, just absolutely incredible amazing thrilling player…..he’s a really big man with really soft soft hands and a really hard hard drive…..”
okay, real quotes:
-“Pavel Datsuyk is a MAN among MEN right now.” (maybe he meant boys?)
-McGuire: .....rant, rant, drool, drool about Rick Nash
-Emrick: “Yeah, he really does it all for this team-”
-Mcguire: “-he does it all for the LEAGUE!!!”

He reminds me of the little brother you were forced to play with as kids, that always stated the obvious with unnecessary urgency just to try to fit it. Annoying, creepy and you just can’t get rid of him.

I really think he did change the analyst roll. Just not for the better. When TSN first started bringing him in during the intermissions I didn’t mind him because he was enthusiastic and he was only on for a few minutes at a time, and that time was shared with a few other guys, but having him between the benches, yelling for three entire periods (god forbid there’s OT and a shootout) is just frigging annoying. I’m so glad that, until January, I’ll only hear him sporadically if TSN simulcasts a Versus game.

Pierre makes me think of “Its Always Sunny:” “There’s not enough salt in the world for him!”
