Phoenix Coyotes Deliver Knock-Out Punch To The Chicago Blackhawks

The Coyotes defeated the Blackhawks 4-0 and the only goal needed by Phoenix was this power play blast from Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Without a doubt, Mike Smith was the difference, particularly early in the game.  In the first period, he stopped 16 shots while Phoenix could only manage 2 on Corey Crawford.

The Coyotes will now host the Nashville Predators in games 1 and 2, while the St. Louis Blues will be welcoming the LA Kings for the first two games of the Western Conference Semi-Finals.

GLENDALE, ARIZONA—- The Phoenix Coyotes won their first postseason series in 25 years tonight, defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 in Game 6 at United Center in Chicago, Ill. to win the Western Conference Quarter-Final 4-2. The Coyotes will face-off against the Nashville Predators in the second round of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Schedule to be determined by the National Hockey League at a later date.

The Coyotes snapped the longest gap between postseason series wins (25 years) by a team in NHL history with tonight’s victory; last series win came during the 1987 Stanley Cup Playoffs when the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Calgary Flames 4-2.

Phoenix has qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in three or more consecutive seasons for the first time since the team clinched a playoff berth in its first four seasons in the Valley (1996-97 to 1999-00). The Coyotes won at least 40 games for the third consecutive season, marking the first time in franchise history that the team has recorded three consecutive seasons with 40-plus wins (franchise record 52 wins in 2009-10). The club has produced the three best seasons in franchise history over the past three years (2009-10 to 2011-12).

And yet, it’s probably the best 4 goaltenders in the west, so maybe we should have seen it two months ago.
