Peter Maher Hanging Up His Microphone

04/29/2014 at 8:38am EDT

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,

Peter Maher, who served as host of the radio broadcasts the first season the Flames were in Calgary and moved behind the microphone the next campaign, will announce his retirement Tuesday morning.

A news conference has been called for 10 a.m. at the Saddledome.

It’s indeed the end of an era. The hall of fame lauded broadcaster whose other trademark phrase, “You can put it in the win column” was the parting words after every victory, including the 1989 Stanley Cup title run and trips to the Final in both 1986 and 2004.

Through all those years, Maher’s talents while calling games – always ensuring he showed respect to goals scored by opposing teams – made him as much a part of the city’s fabric as the players themselves.
