“This summer is just so much different than what I experienced last year,” said Perron, who finished fifth on the team in points, was second in goals, fourth in plus/minus (plus-19) and set a new career-high in game-winning goals (4), all despite missing 25 games. “Last summer, I couldn’t do anything associated with training. It was very tough to take not being able to do it. Now, it couldn’t be more fun that I am able to train. I’m feeling great.”
A feeling that should have Blues supporters thrilled as the team looks to build on a campaign that saw them finish second overall in the Western Conference, a season in which they recorded 49 wins, along with 109 points, to take their eighth divisional crown.
They are also a highly motivated group after losing in four games in the West semifinals to eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Los Angeles Kings.
“I don’t really ever think you can say something good came out of losing, but for us, we learned a lot about ourselves, especially what it takes to win it all,” said Perron, the 26th overall selection of St. Louis in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. “For the five years I’ve been here, everyone, young guys and veterans, each and every player is on the same page, heading in the same direction.
“It didn’t work out the way we hoped last year, but I honestly believe we were able to look at what happened and know what we need to do in order to achieve our end goal. There are 30 teams in this league and only one can win it. We want to be that team.”
Knowing he’ll be a major part of the Blues’ push to land their first Stanley Cup championship has Perron primed and ready to get back on the ice.
