Penguins Will Win The Cup

from Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Everyone around town has been sharing their first-round predictions in recent days. Here`s mine: These Penguins are going to win the Stanley Cup.

And when they do, few of us will even remember how they took out the Flyers.

I`m not suggesting it`ll be easy. Clearly, it won`t, based on the rivals` heated, mostly even back-and-forth this season. But I am saying there isn`t another NHL team — not the Flyers, Canucks, Blues, Predators, Rangers or anyone else — that can match the Penguins` total package.

Scoring?

That was No. 1 in the league, led by the game`s preeminent players in Crosby and Malkin and suddenly one of its preeminent wingers in James Neal.

Depth?

No other team can claim seven players with 17 or more goals, and bear in mind that Crosby isn`t among them. He had eight. Chris Kunitz (26), Pascal Dupuis (25) and Matt Cooke (19) all had career-high outputs in supporting roles.

Let’s see how effective the Penguins will be, after the Flyers have had their way with them. It’s gonna be nasty!

Un-color glasses on-

The Pens seem to have it all firing…that said…

The Flyers are the best team in the East matching up head-to-head with them. This series is too close to call.

I will be resolutely cheering against Pittsburgh, but apparently I am the only one picking them to sweep Philly.  All this talk about toughness is baffling.  They’ve got Hartnell and Simmonds, Coburn and Meszaros, Rinaldo….but mostly they are pretty small and don’t have a lot of bruising power.  The jersey alone doesn’t make them tough.  Also, with 6 or so rookies playing big minutes, Philly won’t have that playoff gear.  Briere is a key playoff guy (also key to the PP) who won’t be there.  If Pronger were playing I could see these 7 game predictions, but I am calling sweep.  Let’s hope I’m wrong and these dicks get bounced right here so they aren’t around to chase my Nucks in the final.

I want the Pens to win and think they will as much as many, but I wish people would stop writing it…!

Mezaros is not playing this series.
Briere is playing today.

Briere’s back but Meszaros is out. Grossmann is back also. I think people outside of Philly are discounting the stability he provided to the D. Him and Coburn are now the Flyers top D pair, letting Timmonen play less minutes with Carle as the 2nd D pair. The 3rd pairing is the one that scares me though. The East/Atlantic this year was funny, Philly beats Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh beats Rangers, Rangers beat Philly.

Annnnddd, one comment in and the entire column and argument falls apart.  Is fact-checking not taught in Pittsburgh or something?

And everybody forgets about an excellent Devils team with an easy 1st round matchup that’ll be waiting in the weeds and rested for one of them in round 2. Strong, strong division.

I know but I just don’t think Brodeur has it anymore. He gives up really weird goals nowadays, but yes, it was a really strong division, 4 of top 5 in conference (Boston had more ROW than the Devils).

Pretty sure this column is about reasons why the Penguins will win the Cup, not why they’re better than the Flyers.

This column is about the Pens winning the Cup, however if you are going to write an article about the virtues of your hometown team, at least be sure that you have your facts straight.
