Penguins the Best?

From Red Fisher at The Gazette:
For now, at least, is there a better team in the NHL than Pittsburgh?
Mention Washington’s 6-0 record and you get no argument from anyone until, that is, the Penguins’ 5-2-2 record is mentioned despite missing their four best players.
Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, Tyler Kennedy and Kris Letang didn’t dress for Thursday’s 3-1 victory over the Canadiens – yet the Pens found something, somewhere to persevere while playing their third game in four nights. The game was Pittsburgh’s ninth in 15 days. No Penguins team has played more games in fewer days to start a season, so how impressive is that?
Add this: the Penguins have picked up at least one point in all but two games this season.

Really?
I expect this sort of drivel out of Pennsylvania, but not in the Montreal Gazette.

OH, what sad times are these when passing roughians can say “Penguins the Best?” at will to old ladies.

How about letting the season get into November before anyone gets anointed the best.

Nope. The MVP talk is already started! Kessel FTW! Or maybe Lehtonen…or maybe we’ll see next week who the flavor of the week is

It isn’t a horrible point really, they have endured serious injuries, and especially if you track it back to last year, it really shows the depth of their organization.
But the implication that Kennedy is one of their four best players… well, if he really believes that, then the Pens can’t be that good. Any team with Kennedy as their fourth best player can’t be very good. Kennedy should be a third-line player on a good team. He’s a great complimentary player, but not a top four player.

EL-OH-EL.
Pens have played 9 games and failed to win (aka “lost”) 4 of them.
They’ve played the Jets, Wild, Flames, Oilers, and Panthers… none of which are any good. They lost to the two better teams they have played (BUF and WAS).
They then play NJ, NYI twice, and then TOR. Nobody is benefiting from a weak start schedule more than the Pens right now, plain and simple. They’ve also played two or three more games than everyone else in the league so far, which helps their place in the standings.
