from the Pittsburgh Penguins,
The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed forward James Neal to a six-year contract extension, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The deal begins with the 2012-13 season and runs through the 2017-18 campaign, and has an average annual value of $5 million.

It’s difficult to re-sign a 20+ goal scorer showing 30+ goal potential (under the right conditions) to a contract averaging less than $5M a year, unless you do some creative accounting a la Franzen.

Not every team circumvents the salary cap and signs a guy to a 10-year contract to knock his cap hit down to $3,954,545 per year.
Or $6,083,333 per year.
Or $4,750,000 per year.
