Peddie On Bettman

Excerpted from Dream Job

by Richard Pettie at the Globe and Mail,

What I have noticed is that newspapers love to run photos that cast Gary Bettman in a dark light. If they can make him look bad, they will. By 2013, he had been commissioner for twenty years. He is not a basketball guy – he is now a hockey guy, and he knows and loves the sport. Canadian media and fans are really down on him.

I read and hear the ugly things they say about him in letters to the editor or online comments or on talk radio. Yet Gary soldiers through. He gets it much worse than I ever did.

When he was badly booed while presenting the Stanley Cup in Vancouver, I immediately emailed him and apologized for the boorish behaviour of the Vancouver fans. Perhaps some of them were the same ones who rushed out and trashed the city after the game. I also found the way that Gary has been interviewed by Ron MacLean unacceptable (I’m thinking especially of the now infamous June 2010 exchange on Hockey Night in Canada, which was both vitriolic and confrontational). I guarantee that none of the NFL or NBA rights holders in the United States would ever treat a league commissioner that way. If CBC-TV loses its Canadian TV rights, that interview – it was an attack, really – might well factor in the league’s decision.

If he feels threatened by you, Gary Bettman may do something to hurt you, and he has many ways to do that: national broadcast deals, how many games he gives the CBC, the venue for the All-Star game, the venue for the annual outdoor game, another franchise coming into your territory.

This is like Hermann Goering writing a review on Hitler.  Peddie ran the Leafs in similar fashion as Bettman runs the NHL.  No regard for the history of the sport or it’s fan but all on how to squeeze more money out of people.

How dare they repeat to people what Bettman has done? That will make him look bad!

What a boot-licking sycophant.

Man!!! ....That almost made me weep….....Almost!!!!

What? Did Pettie lose some bet to gary, and this is the make good?????

Strange timing for this puff piece?

Poor gary all those fans booing him and he didn’t do anything to deserve it.

I believe the Ron Mclean interview he refrences was one of HNIC’s finest hours. Finslly someone asking actual tough questions of the midget.

Hey, if gary can’t take the abuse ...then resign and give back the $7, 500, 000 per year salary and go back and be Stern’s little buddy.

Screw Bettman!! and Screw Pettie for that piece of tripe.

And furthermore!!

If the CBC looses its brodcast rights it will be because TSN or Rogers, or somebody else paid gary more money!! Period!!

The Evil Garden Gnome is personally responsible for most of what ails the NHL.  His wrong-headed advocacy of expansion into the sun belt has hurt the league immeasurably.  His support of bad owners (see Philly, New Jersey, Buffalo, etc.) has injured the value of the good franchises.  Buttman has been a disaster.

Peddie should have emailed him and said, “Why don’t you stay the hell out of places where people justifiably hate you because of the pathetic job you’ve done as commissioner.”

My personal belief is that Lil’ Gary is such a passive-aggressive masochist that he actually gets off on getting booed.

Gary might be pathetic personally but he has turned the league into a huge money maker and deserves enormous credit for that. Sunbelt expansion happened nearly two decades ago get over it. the league is much better off with a hard cap. revenues have skyrocketed. Nhl would not be in as good of shape without Bettman. he has more than earned that salary. and of course next TV deal will be all about dollars. with that money directly tied to players salary he will be required to take best deal. cap will be 80 million in 3 years. players should be thanking Gary just like fan should but never will

NHL revenues were a joke when Bettman took over, so it seems they really only had one way to go, up.  I just wonder if there was a commissioner that wasn’t so concerned with making money for the owners, not only would revenues be up, but they would be up without three work stoppages, without the ridiculous on ice officiating we have today, and without the countless other issues the league has that have nothing to do with money.

Bettman is not and has never been in my eyes the NHL Commissioner, he’s been the NHL Owners’ Commissioner.  The best interest of the game itself has never been his top priority, and only when the the best interests of the game have coincided with what will make the most money have the best interests of the game ever been served under his watch.
