The search process, conducted by a five-member committee of NHLPA members and the executive search firm Reilly Partners of Chicago, culminated with the introduction of Kelly at today’s media conference in Toronto.
“It is a distinct honour and privilege to be chosen by the players to serve as the Executive Director of their union,” said Kelly “I look forward to advocating tirelessly for the membership as we prepare to enter what I believe will be an exciting and prosperous new chapter for the NHLPA.

Asked what he stood for and how he would deal with several contentious issues confronting the NHLPA, the 51-year-old former Boston trial lawyer spoke of establishing a relationship with the NHL and particularly commissioner Gary Bettman.
“What I’d like to do is sit down with Gary and just talk for awhile,” Kelly told the media at a news conference in Toronto. “We need to get to know each other … I understand there’s a line there, that we represent our sides. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have respect for one another.”
