Parise Update - Short Edition

I am sure many of you just want a decision from Zach Parise but…

Today Michael Russo found Parise at the airport and to make it short, no decision yet, needs to talks with fiancee which has not yet happened.

More in the numerous Russo tweets.

Piss poor planning on Parise’s part. His agent, him and his fiancee should have had a list of potential teams before July 1. They should have evaluated all of those teams, even ranked them. So that when the offers poured in yesterday, all that was left was to evaluate the money.

If his preparedness for UFA is indicative of his work ethic, I’m not sure I would want to spend all that money on him if I were an owner. All the teams had their pitches prepared prior to July 1. The absolute very least Parise could do was to be as prepared as the teams.

Meh. I think it’s obvious he doesn’t know what to do. Several offers from several great teams and he can’t decide which one to go to.

This is what I’ve been saying and has been my issue.  How do you not have a general idea of where you’d like to go, Nash was able to put together a list.  I do not understand how Parise did not have ANY CLUE about where could possibly want to sign prior to July 1.  I’d be more inclined to think that they are biding time to a team that wants him and maybe doesn’t have the money yet and are trying to match an offer on his second team.  Jagr style.  Just my guess.  Agents seem to be much more vocal this year than in years past.  They know this is their chance to get while the gettin’s good.  I’m just sorry Parise is going along with the dog and pony show when really he’s not helping his other player breathren or any team that made a pitch for him.

A million times this.  This is basically what I tweeted to someone a few minutes ago.  It reflects very, very poorly on his preparedness and ethic, and there just really is no excuse in the end.

EVERYONE knew who was going to make serious offers and be in the running days before July1st.  Everyone.  How you can’t have this conversation days ago to iron out those details ahead of time is beyond me.  But apparently either Zach or his wife is milking this for all it’s worth and enjoying every minute of it.

Suter isn’t any better in a way I guess, but at least he’s got a gag order going or something.  Not anywhere near as much drama surrounding him.

Why?  There were 20 teams interested in his services.  Even if a couple drop out because they’re impatient he won’t have a hard time finding someone who will fall over himself to sign Parise.

If his preparedness for UFA is indicative of his work ethic

It’s not.

Nash was asked to put together a list, and I’m sure Parise put together a list too, but putting together a list and picking the best deal off that list while factoring in the team, the money, the area, the school situation and whether +/- $1M a year makes a difference when considering that you’re going to be spending the rest of your professional career there and potentially raising a brood of children there.

Nash put together a list, his job is down because now all the heavy lifting has to be done by Howson.

The point being that he probably doesn’t have an interest in joining over half the teams in the league.  He could’ve had an idea of what teams he had serious interest in joining and see what their offers were.

Feels more like hype than logistics.

He has an Agent that has got to get his share too. I won’t lay all the blame on the player. Same goes for Suter. It is all aboot the bottom line as well as the bottom feeders.

The name Alan Eagleson comes to mind when I think of an agent/douchebagger. They are all from the same mold.

Yeah, that’s got to be it.  In fact, he probably didn’t even go to Toronto at all.  He’s been sitting at home, smoking his pipe and twirling the moustache that he grew just for this occasion.

F*cking get over yourselves.  He’s making the decision of his professional life.

The reason he has to pore over a dozen offers and decide which 12-13 year deal is BECAUSE everyone knows what his work ethic is.  Stop pretending that this guy is some unknown NHL quanitity like Just Schultz.  He’s the premiere forward available in the UFA pool and he’s damn well earned the right to take his time making up his mind.

If he decided in the first five minutes of free agency and then, at the end of next season, decided that he wasn’t a fit with the team or the city, the entire lot of you would be pissing and moaning about him making a snap decision without properly thinking it over and wondering about his worth ethic and his character.

Questioning Parise’s work ethic because he takes 3 days to decide where he’ll be for the next 10 years is ridiculous. He’s played 7 seasons in the NHL, and played 81+ games in 6 of them. He’s one of the most committed players, shift-to-shift, I’ve ever seen. He’s a puck battling demon, gives a tremendous effort on both ends of the ice, starts and finishes seasons strong, has great conditioning, and is a worthy captain.

Shame on you keyboard warriors.

Still goes to my point that I’m doubting the entire league was in contention for him.  Also reports from insiders have 5 or 6 teams listed as “still in the mix”..  They are the same teams that were speculated to make a pitch for the past month sans LA which was a flash in the pan.

So it looks like everyone has been on the same page for quite a while not unofficially.  I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have thought he’d have made some kind of effort before hand so that there was less information to assimilate come go-time.

And the guy plays in JERSEY.  And he was still considering them, so I gotta wonder if that crap about raising a family and schools and what not REALLY had any bearing.

Yeah, but he still has to make the decision of his career.

And let’s not assume that, just because we all watch the media and know from this source or that source who was interested.  He could’ve been blindsided by the fact that Pittsburgh moved some pieces around to be able to accomodate his potential salary and maybe they went from a distant thought to a serious consideration.

Maybe I’m being naive, but then again he’s taken two full days to decide, so obvious there is some serious consideration happening that he might not have anticipated.

Or maybe he and Suter discussed the possibility of going somewhere together and Suter has decided he wants to to “x” and Parise was leaning towards “y”, so now he has to decide how important it might be to play together or separately for the next dozen years.

No, but you can bet when Marian Hossa was fielding offers after the 2008 playoffs and considering Detroit’s one-year offer there had to be at least some part of him mind going “sure, it’s Edmonton, but $9M a year for nine years is a LOT”.

@Liter_Cola Sure. It’s got to be a factor. He’s from Minneapolis, too. Does that mean he will sign with Minnesota? Not necessarily.

It’s not his (or Suter’s) fault that every GM wants to wait his decision to start doing their jobs. This is someone’s life for fuch’s sake. Most of us probably spent Monday to Thursday think whether we’d watch The Avengers or MiB³ in the movies Friday night, you give them three days to decide their whole frickin’ lives?

I’l say it again, if the NHL (and the PA) wants FA day to truly be a “frenzy”, they should have a week for getting offers, and another to sign the contracts. It’s really unfair to pressure them into something they might regret later.

This guy isn’t a team jumper, I don’t think money is number one with them.  They want to be in a comfortable place with a good organization who isn’t going to relocate or go bankrupt who has a track record of success.  List isn’t long.

I’m much more inclined to believe it’s the agents trying to get a payday before the new CBA reduces salaries if there’s a cap rollback.  Reduces salaries on new contracts.  In instances where it’s taken forever for the big fish to get hooked, it’s been money related.  Again, being as these guys dont seem like money first priority guys, I’m blaming the agents right now.

They acted like time was of the essence, couldn’t even see Mr. I and Cheli, didn’t want Holland to come over to pitch in person.  Too many they said, if we spend on hour listening to every team that’s interested, that’s at least 3 days worth.  Not enough time for that??  Whole thing just hasn’t seemed too classy, with the process, feel like one day they need to rush rush rush, and now they say what’s wrong with waiting?>  Agents are waiting for counter-offers to max their payday.

What would be classier?  Narrowing it down to two and having his agent put his hands behind his back so he can pick a hand?

They acted like time was of the essence

There’s a difference between not wanting to sit in a room listening to pitches from teams you would never ever in your life consider playing for and taking the time to weigh a couple real, potential options.

He could have had his options narrowed in his mind to two teams, and those two teams gave him the exact same offer.

So how easy is it to decide?

How many times have you been to a restaurant and had your choices narrowed to down to two options, then you choose one and regret not choosing the other?

That’s one meal.  These guys are deciding on the rest of their professional lives.

Garth - very well put.  I agree, everyone needs to chill out.

I personally feel that the big hang up is that he wants to stay in NJ, but he’s looking at what is going on with the Phoenix Coyotes and that’s messing with his head.  Other thing is that MN was prolly pretty close to the top of his list, but they are not a proven contender, yes they have a lot of potential, but so do the Avs and Oilers, but where has that gotten them?  They are not considered a perenniel Cup contender.
Then you have the offers from Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, and they are all probably tied for 3rd on his list and they are all perennial contenders with strong history and at the very least very good teams.
Now take all that into consideration and you have a decision that is going to take a long time.  Get over yourselves and realize that Parise’s world does not revolve around you, but himself and his family.

I think Parise should let message boards decide where he is going to play, since that would make this process that much quicker. He’s going to be filthy rich regardless of where he goes, he needs to decide on quality of life.

Stay with the Devils and be a loyal Captain and have NYC A stones throw away without the pressure? Go home to Minny and be a king, but in a fishbowl on a team that may never be a contender. Go to Pittsburgh and be the number 3 guy on a team that can be one hit away from him being the number 2 guy? Just take the cash that PHilly is reportedly offering, then watch as they trade him before the ink dries amidst boos from the entire fan base? Go to MoTown with a well built organization, but that is in need of him to ensure there is no downtime as they figure out how to replace Lidstrom?

The one smart thing when know he is doing is getting married after the contract is signed.

Michael Russo Beat reporter for the Wild was on 93.7 The Fan in the Burgh & this is a Post from Hockey Futures boards Summarizing what he said

Russo is talking to Starkey on the radio in 5 minutes.

He says he thinks Pens are the favorite

Doesnt think Chicago is a good fit, they were a zoo behind the scenes

Doesn’t think decision is made but also doesn’t buy that he hasn’t been talking with his fiance

Thinks that Lou is guilt tripping, isn’t sure if Wild is actually in it and he might just be including them to be nice

Thinks Philly would be surprising, next rival next to NYR.

Thinks Pitt/NJ/Chi favorites

its all conjecture, no real “inside” sources

Thinks leaving NJ is why it is taking so long, would be shocked if it got this far and went back to NJ

Giving mad props to Shero for pulling off the staal trade when Carolina knew they were getting him in a year

Hearing Wild might have offered 110-130 12-13 years.

He really doesnt think money is a big deal. Thinks that hurts Wild’s chances. Thinks Zach cares about winning above all, and thats why pens are favorite.
