P.K. Subban And The Montreal Canadiens Have Agreed To A Contract

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced Saturday that the team has agreed to terms on an eight-year contract extension with defenseman P.K. Subban (2014-15 to 2021-22).

“We are very pleased to have reached a long term agreement with P.K. Subban. This agreement helps consolidate the future of our team. A key element of our group of young veterans, P.K. plays with a high level of intensity every time he steps onto the ice. Despite his young age, he carries a great deal of experience and brings contagious energy to the team. Defensemen of his level are a rare commodity in the NHL” said Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin.

Subban’s eight year deal with MTL has an AAV of $9M.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, good thing Bergevin decided to play hardball with Subban.

Does that mean that he is coming to Detroit in a sign and trade?

Bergevin probably isn’t very good at poker.

better he signs him now and make sure he stays in montreal, because if he didn’t you can be sure that he will head to FA as soon as possible and leave montreal

To all those slagging Bergevin…..

Neither you or I were in that room or part of these discussions. What if Subban and his representatives were asking for one of the following options?

a) 1 year at $8.5M
c) 4 years at $9.5M
d) 8 years at $11M

a) A one year deal leaves you right back here next season and PK can just elect to go to one year arbitration and he walks in 2016

b) A four year deal locks him down until he is 29 then he is a UFA and can do what he wants at what ever price he can get.

c) An eight year deal with the highest cap hit in the league and a salary structure that would likely ensure the Habs are a top-heavy team.

To those that say Bergevin should have given him what he wanted 2 years ago…...

Hindsight is 20/20. Would PK have still won the Norris if he was not driven to prove himself? Would PK have had a different attitude (about anything really) if he was locked down through his entire 20s?. Who knows.

What is done is done. Habs and PK came to a deal that obviously both could live with.

There’s 22 other letters in the alphabet. Why stop there?

I’m sure the headline in the Toronto Star tomorrow will be “Is Subban Going to be a Leaf Soon?”
