Operating As A Small Market Team

The Blues, the worst team in the league last season, were desperate. The Sabres would have preferred to retain McKee, whose skills they appreciate, but they know it couldn't be at a stratospheric salary. The fans, McKee's Buffalo teammates and some of the media are in a snit over the Sabres' willingness to see him depart. For them, owner Tom Golisano, who was portrayed as the franchise rescuer not long ago, is now being seen as a cheapskate. It says here that Golisano is operating the team as he operates his other businesses - realistically. The Sabres were in bankruptcy before he was convinced it would be a good idea to buy them. Before that there was a strong chance they would land in another city and Buffalo would be without one of its two major-league teams.
