One UFA Defenseman Who Intrigues Me

That is Willie Mitchell.  Many of you know Willie Mitchell did not return to the Canucks last season after taking a hit from Evgeni Malkin in mid-January.

Mitchell suffered from post-concussion syndrome but recent reports state he is feeling better.

Will a team take a shot and sign him long-term, will they wait until September to see how he feels or will teams just stay away from him totally?

When healthy, Mitchell is a top 4 defenseman and a very solid defensive player.

Whoever gets him will be very, very happy.  I think he’s out of the Wings’ price range, anyway, as he’s still a $1.5-2 million player, but he’s mean, he’s big, he’s a good skater, has great vision, a nice outlet pass and can do just about anything you ask of him.

Agreed, Willie is an excellent defenceman, a 1-2 really.  Excellent shutdown man and great stick checks with that outrageously long stick.  He also hits like a Mack truck, just ask Jonathan Toews. He won’t be skating for about two weeks yet, but if everything works ok, he’ll likely want to sign a one year deal to re-establish his value at the $3.5M paid last year in Vancouver.

I said before UFA Season that I hoped the Wings would somehow figure out a way to bring him into the fold.

as a DRW fan, this would be the one off-season move what would truly make me giddy…seems like a longshot given the team’s salary cap sitation…but it would make my summer!
