Kukla's Korner Hockey

One Simple Question

Two games tonight, Winnipeg at Columbus and Detroit at Minnesota.

Then no NHL games until Monday.

So a simple question as we head into the All-Star break.

Who is your favorite to win the Stanley Cup?

Mine, the Blues repeat.

Extra credit if you pick the other team in the SCF.  Mine is Washington.

Tampa Bay over St. Louis

It’s hard not to envision a team from the Central division winning out West. All the Pacific teams are just too inconsistent and the teams near the top lack the experience for a long run. St. Louis’s biggest challenger is probably Dallas but they have some inconsistency issues of their own. Winnipeg’s defense/goaltending will ultimately be exposed. Colorado is getting darn close but will probably wear down. Nashville could be a dark horse but their special teams are killing them. Play in their defensive zone is has been a problem all season.

Tampa Bay will learn a lot from prior disappointments. Boston, Washington and perhaps Pittsburgh seem to be biggest challengers. Carolina could rock some boats again but injury to Hamilton is a big loss. Could Florida get better goaltending from Bob and enter the mix? They always seem like a team on the cusp. There is a lot of talent there but a serious run requires playoff experience. Toronto might be best off seen as an underdog team but Boston and/or Tampa will really test their patience. Frankly, it pathetic how little they seem to care about backup goaltending. A team in the hunt for the Stanley Cup should have a solid #2. If they lose a series because of it, there is going to be explaining to do.

I’m thinking Washington if they trade Holtby and have Samsonov in net, otherwise Boston.  West coast opponent: Colorado.

I went with Dallas at the start of the year, so won’t back away from that pick now.

Let’s go long shot:  the Islanders.

It’s hard to say, because a lot can change between now and the end of the regular season. But, at this point, I feel the Blues will repeat.  They’re a great team who seem to be poised to put together another very strong run.
