One Man’s Boycott Of The NHL

from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News,

Starting at 12:01 a.m. (ET) on Wednesday morning, I will be imposing a complete boycott of the NHL until 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Feb. 25, the last day of the men’s Olympic tournament. As such, I will not write one word about the NHL, either in our magazine or on our website. I will not watch one second of one NHL game on television, will not click on nhl.com one single time, will not read about the NHL or even talk about it. I will not comment on it, I will not monitor it or pay any attention to it.

I will instead monitor the Olympic tournament from afar in my pajamas and bunny slippers from the comfort of my couch. I will go out and watch minor hockey. (Anyone out there with a compelling story at any level below the NHL is free to get in touch during the next 12 days.) I will go to junior games and watch them on television and in addition to my beer league game every Thursday night, I’ll probably strap on the blades and play a little outdoor shinny, weather permitting.

Why? Well, first of all, because I’m pissed off. As I write this, I probably should be on a plane to Pyeongchang, and I would have had the NHL been participating in the Games.

Well I hope he feels special. Also hope the Hockey News takes 11 days of your PTO away.

Huh, seems like the Olympic hockey tournament might be something The Hockey News might send somebody to cover…

I’m with him.  I’ll read KK (no reason Paul should suffer), but won’t tune into any games or hit the NHL.com website.  Sure it helps that the Wings aren’t going anywhere during my absence, and Center Ice already has my money (so this is extra superfluous), but I’m only following through with this because I’m pissed off at what could’ve been.

(I’m not calling it a boycott.  This is purely an empty gesture.  But it’s one I can live with.)

Also, I started last Friday.  Did I miss any interesting Wings games over the weekend?  (Ugh.)

I agree. I even click on an ad every other day to make sure the revenue keeps coming in.

Here, here! Sometimes you just have to take a stand. Considering how some folks complain about writers, and, beat writers that won’t make waves, it’s kind of refreshing to read someone going against the status quo.

I understand the point, but wow what a self important tone. One writer I could more than happily do without.

The fact that he’s not on a plane to cover the Olympics seems to more more the fault of the Hockey News, not the NHL after all it’s called THE HOCKEY NEWS, not the NHL news.

I mean, I watched curling instead of the Red Wings the other night.

But that’s not a boycott of the NHL, so much as curling being more compelling than watching the Wings right now.

I also didn’t write an entire attention-seeking article about it.

I enjoyed Olympic hockey before the NHL was involved, when the NHL was involved and plan to enjoy it once again without the NHL’s involvement.  I don’t understand why it has to be an all or nothing proposition…just my 2 cents.

Wow, just looked at the THN website, and there’s not a single word about the women’s tournament which is already underway. They already have a page with the standings for the men’s, tho. I guess they don’t bother with the women’s game at all. And the most recent Olympics-related article (other than this guy) is from 25 Jan, when the rosters were all announced.

FWIW, I’ll be watching both, but when curling is on they’ll both be taking a back seat.

Hockey news should be covering hockey. The nhl is just a closed league that happens to play hockey. The bigger event in hockey right now is the Olympics. But let’s face it, this publication should effectively be named nhl News, but they don’t because the nhl would claim copyright infringement, sue, expect royalties, etc.

I suppose it’s possible they (Hockey News) sent someone else to cover Olympic hockey, and Campbell is crying bitter tears over it.

Oddly, the hockey I enjoyed the most last night was the Beanpot final.
Congratulations Northeastern University.

Ken should continue his boycott after the Olympics and just go away.

Good for Ken.

I’m going to follow suit by continuing my lifelong boycott of Ken Campbell.

While I can get with this in spirit, I’ll actually be doing the opposite. I’m heading to Nashville to catch the games versus the Red Wings and Ottawa.

But I’ll also be watching Olympic hockey. I’ve already watch some women’s games and I’m hoping to see Datsyuk and Kovalchuk play for Russia (the “Olympic Athletes from Russia” thing is ridiculous). I’m sure there will be entertaining hockey in Korea but I would have much preferred the NHL players there.

I stopped reading the Hockey News years ago. Many, many years ago I actually had a paper version mailed to me. A couple of years back I stopped even reading their online version. There is so much better hockey news available online that there is no reason to even bother with the Hockey News anymore. If it wasn’t for KK I wouldn’t have even known that Ken Campbell still existed. The best players in the world play in the NHL. The best tournament is for the Stanley Cup. That is what I watch.
