Kukla's Korner Hockey

On the Hockey Blogs

By Alanah Downie I'll open this on a very sad note today. Mike at the Ottawa Sports Blog wrote a bit last week about the recent death of a hockey blogger, Canadian Armed Forces Infantry Captain (ret.) Thomas DeChastelain, of Sens Watch* (*site has been removed): "On the web, blogs can take on a life of their own; it's easy to forget sometimes that each blog is connected to a person. A shocking and sad event like this is a jolting reminder." Please take a moment to read more at the link above.
Well, this is an exciting time of year for hockey fans and hockey bloggers alike. The blogosphere is loaded with great stuff and here's a quick sample to get you started. (And if you want more, go to the left sidebar here on Kukla's Korner and explore some great blogs.) To start, Colby Cosh at Battle of Alberta forewarns readers: "Must have Javascript enabled to enjoy lameass joke". (Sure, he says it's a lameass joke, but curiosity will make you click that link anyway, right? Absolutely.) Also at BofA are new additions to their glossary of terminology for 2006-07, where you'll find out what it means to be "phaneufed", among other things. From the American Hockey Fan is his piece "Welcome back hockey. We missed you." A great column reflecting on the game, which includes such gems as "let's be clear- I'm not advocating heroin." (Yeah, that would be for the best, AHF...) And over at Raking Leafs, Ninja is really pissed at Comcast. (I sympathize. Personally, I just paid Shaw Cable over $180 to be able to see 17 pay-per-view games out here in Vancouver. My beer budget for October is totally screwed.) The Yankee Canuck takes an "honest look at the NHL's best upcoming experiment in team chemistry: Your Vancouver Canucks." A great article on the Canucks, plus it was there that I stumbled upon Taylor Pyatt's MySpace Page. (Some people have waaaayyy too much time on their hands. And if you are one of those people, can you please make us all a fake Patrick Roy MySpace Page? Something trashy and featuring the Statue of Liberty would be lovely...) Hockey Dirt points out a way to get rich off the business of hockey that no one else thought of... except one Pittsburgh alluminum company. And in October, what's more natural than picking the year-end award winners? At Hockey Rants, Jes and Greg fight it out in Part One of their early bird feature. In summary, Jes says a bunch of complimentary things about Mikka Kiprusoff, (irritating) and Greg picks Tomas Vokoun as a favorite (much better). Finally, a couple things over at Battle of California: first, J.S. Giguere has terrible taste in art; second, a nod to the HUGE problem shared by hockey fans everywhere: what do you do when your fantasy hockey team conflicts with your favorite hockey team? In this case, an LA Kings fan is cheering for the Sharks and the Ducks. Apparently Hell has frozen over -- It must be time for the NHL to get on the ice!
