On The Mitch Marner Signing

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

Kyle Dubas was smiling like he had won the Stanley Cup.

But it should have been Mitch Marner with the Cheshire Cat-like grin.

He was the winner on this Saturday afternoon. The winner by knockout or unanimous decision. You take your pick.

The deal is done and Marner will be paid $65+ million over the next six years — which makes sense if he was a better player than Nikita Kucherov in Tampa or Brad Marchand in Boston.

Which he may be one day but just hasn’t been yet.

Kucherov is the NHL’s most valuable player and leading scorer. He’ll earn $1 million a year less than Marner with the Lightning.

In all fairness, Rummy, Marshit had 10 more goals and four more points than Marner last year. If they were basing contracts on the character of the player, Marshit wouldn’t make more than $2M per year. But that’s not how it works.

On the other hand, Kucherov had 15 more goals and 34 more points than Marner. So using those stats, Marner was drastically overpaid.

But if the Leafs want to commit nearly 50% of their cap to four players, that’s fine with me. Now we’ll get to see just how great a coach Babcock really is.

I hear ya OTC. I guess it was the comparison using Apples to, well, Hopelessly vertically challenged NHL players from Boston, that got to me.

Babs has a full tool box now and the excuse train left last season….I agree it is time to deliver.
