Nathan MacKinnon was injured for the Colorado Avalanche after being hit by Boston Bruins forward Taylor Hall early in the first period of a 4-3 overtime win at Ball Arena on Wednesday.
The center was down on the ice for about a minute and was bleeding from his face before being helped to the locker room by a trainer at 2:22. Hall hit him six seconds earlier while MacKinnon was carrying the puck near the Colorado blue line.
"It's unfortunate the way it happened," Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog said. "I feel a little responsible for giving him a soft play up the middle, but stuff happens and it happens quick. Unfortunately, Nate's hurt now and we don't know for how long, just hope he's OK."
Hall was initially called for a major penalty, but following a video review it was reduced to a minor for interference after it was determined that MacKinnon was hit with his own stick.
"Not good enough to return to the game, so we'll see what tomorrow presents," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. "I had a chance to review it and the way he catches him, Nate's stick was up, so I believe they probably made the right call, but it's the type of hit the League's trying to get rid of."
