On The Agenda For Today’s GM Meetings

Besides the slashing calls....

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,

FACEOFF VIOLATIONS

The GMs will discuss how to better get the officials and the players on the same page as to what is and what is not allowed....

COACHES CHALLENGE

When the NHL allowed coaches to challenge potential offsides when a goal was scored, a Pandora’s box opened up. Suddenly, everything was being challenged with no consequences. This year, a failed challenge results in a penalty....

ONE-MINUTE PENALTIES IN OT

This one is interesting and it sort of makes a lot of sense. When a penalty is called in overtime, play becomes 4-on-3. That’s a massive difference than 5-on-4 play during regulation time....

PUCK OVER GLASS

Don’t expect this one to get solved anytime soon, but there is talk again of whether officials should determine a player’s intent when a puck goes out of play....

more on each of the above plus the slashing calls and goalie interference...

Not sure how you determine a player’s intent in this scenario. No one wants to put the puck out of play, but the rule makes players think twice before they try to clear the puck high off the glass. This leads to more turnovers in the defensive zone and theoretically more offense.

So what’s the solution? If you decide the guy was trying to get a penalty, he gets a penalty, and if you decide he wasn’t trying to get a penalty he doesn’t?

How about talking about intent when it comes to the occasional errant stick that gets up in a face or when it comes to a guy getting a tripping penalty because an opponent stepped on his stick?

Intent? F*ck off. Nobody has ever intended to get a penalty by putting the puck over the glass.

They are bound ans determined to male this game unwatchable. You had a perfectly good set of rules to begin with. Pull your heads out of your asses and enforce them, and everything will be fine. Stop micro managing every part of the game.
