Oilers Waive Souray & Gerber

Numerous tweets state the Oilers have put Sheldon Souray and Martin Gerber on waivers.

Any chance a team decides to put a claim in for either one of them?

Isles should claim Souray.

Why?

With Strait out, if they want any legitimate shot at the playoffs they need a d-man. Plus they are still under the cap floor.

Gerber might fit in at Minnesota

1) Underperforming, injury-prone Sheldon Souray gives them a legitimate shot at the playoffs?

2) They can get cheaper players to bring them up to the cap floor, so why pay for %4.5M to Souray?

The Islanders are above the cap floor. Streit’s salary, even if on LTIR, still counts against the floor, just not against the ceiling (which the Islanders couldn’t see with a ten foot ladder).

I think even wtih Streits salary they were beneath the cap floor unless I missed some news recently.

Depends where you look.  Capgeek has them above the floor, nhlnumbers has them beneath it, I’ve heard both.

I guess we’ll know when/if the make a move.

They already have too many players signed. Why sign 3 more players to equal his salary. He might be better on a team thats not the Oilers.

They dont have to put streit or okposo on ltir, they can keep the salaries on the books. Last i saw they were still under the floor.

Obviously our opinions are different. I think they should go after him

Easy to say that when you’re playing with someone else’s $4.5M dollars.

They would be limited to 23 on the roster though, so putting them on LTIR would allow productive players a spot on the team.  Even if they put them on LTIR rules state that it takes the players salary off towards the cap limit however continues to count against the cap floor.  Doesn’t matter one way or the other, but LTIR lets them fill those spots with healthy players.
