The Edmonton Oilers have announced that they will once again be participating in the Vancouver Canucks Young Stars Tournament in Penticton B.C. Several young Oilers prospects are guaranteed three games in this round robin tournament; one against the Vancouver Canucks’, Calgary Flames’, and San Jose Sharks’ prospects from September 12th to 16th. At this tournament last year, many Oilers fans were given the opportunity to see Magnus Paajarvi, Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall play together in a game situation for the first time.
This year, the Edmonton Oilers have invited Kelowna Rockets’ goalie Adam Brown. Brown is undrafted in the NHL and according to the voice of the Rockets, Regan Bartel will be one of three 20 year olds with the Rockets next year.
This does not mean that the Oilers are not confident with their goalies currently in the system (such as one of my personal favourites Tyler Bunz) but rather that it would not have been convenient to bring their Finnish goalies for this camp and that they will likely be unavailable due to commitments with their current teams. Similarly Olivier Roy will likely be at the Oklahoma City Barons camp. The Edmonton Oilers do have a need for goaltenders going forward; their prospects are all just that at this point, prospects, and need time in order for the organization to determine whether or not these players can take the necessary steps to become NHL goalies.
This is also an excellent opportunity for Brown to be observed not only by the Edmonton Oilers, but also the other teams participating in the tournament and any scouts that will also be in attendance.
