Observations For The Maven

from Stan Fischler of The Fischler Report (two days ago),

* When the supposedly objective -- as in fair -- Dan Bylsma-Ray Shero team pick their Penguins defenseman Paul Martin over the more worthy Andy Greene for Team USA you have a hockey definition of nepotism.

* My choice for The Most Overachieving NHL Team is Anaheim. Good players? Yes. Superb coach? Bruce Boudreau has done a deluxe job putting the Ducks into Cup-contending position.

* Four players I expect to be traded sooner rather than later: 1. Mike Cammalleri; 2. Nail Yakupov; 3. Michael Del Zotto; 4. Jack Johnson.

* Hands-down winner of the Build-up-To A Letdown Award goes to the Edmonton Oilers. Owner Darryl Katz really must love his general staff to put up with their inefficiency without a major-major shakeup.

An email I sent to Stan-no apology yet.

Hi Stan, I’ve followed your hockey musings for a long time.

It might have already been pointed out to you, but you missed it on Andy Green and the US Olympic team. It’s my understanding because he was not included on the Olympic drug testing list, that was decided back in August, that there was not a way that he could be selected to the team, no matter how good a year he has had in advance of the Olympics, and he’s had a good one. Otherwise, I’m sure he would have been selected.

This is a selection process flaw, not prejudice by Ray Shero and Dan Bylsma.

There’s also the minor detail of Andy Greene being Not Very Good on a Not Good hockey team.  I’ll just take the stab that it played a role.

Fischler is what Don Cherry will be in a few more years when the mind really starts to go even more, and he can’t just be so loud anymore to make up for it.
