WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Capitals and Verizon Center, both owned and operated by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, are the first professional sports team and venue to preview the professional sports fan engagement app, Skybox, built specifically for Google Glass. Developed by APX Labs, Skybox brings a whole new level of engagement to fans attending a live event. As the first professional sports team and venue to preview a fan engagement app on Skybox for Google Glass, the app allows Capitals fans to stay connected at the game by referencing real-time stats, playing in-game highlights, instant replays and more.

“Monumental Sports & Entertainment has a history of employing state-of-the-art technology to bring the best experience to their fans at Verizon Center,” said APX Labs’ chief executive officer Brian Ballard. “When we sought out a team and venue to work with, Monumental Sports was the ideal local partner. It’s also a great point of pride that our home town team can highlight how D.C. is a leader in sports and technology innovation.”

APX Labs, co-founded by Maryland natives Brian Ballard and Jeff Jenkins, is headquartered in Herndon, Va. Their enterprise software platform, Skylight, provides companies an avenue for creating smart glasses applications for use in hands-free, in-context, real-time scenarios. Skybox is an extension of the Skylight platform for professional sports fan engagement that can be configured and customized to the unique interests of fans and leagues.

“Skybox for Google Glass creates an amazing, visual experience for fans at the game,” said Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer Joe Dupriest. “In working with APX Labs to test their new pro sports fan engagement app we’re able to provide our fans a way to customize their own experiences while at the game. They can stay connected, access team stats and highlights, and watch the game all in real-time.”

Google Glass is an elegant, lightweight frame and display that rests neatly above your eyes and makes exploring and sharing the world around you faster and easier, first introduced in February 2013 with the “Explorer Edition.” It is the most widely commercialized smart glasses platform deployed to date, featuring an out-of-eye transparent display, camera, processor and specialized build of the popular Android operating system.
