Nottingham Panthers Sign Cam Janssen

from the Nottingham Panthers,

The GMB Nottingham Panthers have made their last signing of the summer in the shape of NHL star Cam Janssen.

The American had 336 games in “the show” most recently just two seasons ago with New Jersey Devils, before that he was at St Louis after starting his NHL career with the Devils who drafted him in the fourth round in 2002.

Last season he was on a two-way contract with New Jersey and their AHL affiliate Albany where he played taking his AHL games total to over 200.

Cam is a high energy player, who looks after his team mates, knows when to do his stuff, and who is very excited to join the Panthers roster.

Former players of the Panthers played a big part in recommending the club to him and the player to the club and head coach Corey Neilson couldn’t hide his enthusiasm for the signing when he spoke to Panthers Radio this morning.

from the Nottingham Post,

Coach Corey Neilson made no effort to hide his enthusiasm over Janssen’s signing as he credited former Panthers Jordan Fox and Brock Wilson in the player’s arrival.

“This guy is something. I felt waves and waves of relentless energy for this guy’s passion for the game when I spoke to him on the phone,” he told the club.

“I got this call out of the blue from Jordan Fox saying ‘this guy’s available, he wants to be a Panther. I told him all about the place.’

“It was the same thing with Brock Wilson. I’ve never been so excited speaking to a player on the phone as I was to Cam.

“He knows his job. He’s a guy who will bring tonnes of energy. He likes to hit, likes to fight, likes to skate and likes to win championships.

“It’s one way to complete a roster. We are thrilled with where we’re at.”

I’d say that’s a pretty loose interpretation of the word “star.” Sportsforecaster.com has a slightly more realistic description of Janssen: “Career Potential: Veteran part-time enforcer.” grin

For the EIHL, a player that has played in the NHL for any decent time in any capacity is pretty much considered a freaking star.  Guys that play and contribute some in the ECHL can go over to the EIHL and sometimes be stars, so…

It was the same domestically in the old UHL/IHL 2.0… low-AA, maybe more single-A minor hockey.  Landing a guy with any NHL experience at all is considered a huge coup at that level.

A lot of the real EIHL fans over there in the UK also follow the NHL, so…. for a name they recognize to come over, it’s a good way to move some extra tickets.

Occasionally, those NHL enforcers go over there and turn into actual scorers too.

Well, he/they may be considered a “star” over there, but that’s not what the writer said. He said Janssen was an “NHL star.” But at this point, he is exactly what Sportscaster.com described him as…a part-time enforcer in the NHL. Period. End of story.
