No Rebuild In Calgary

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

Forget the rebuild.

Although many had predicted this offseason might finally see the departure of captain Jarome Iginla and/or goalie Miikka Kiprusoff in an attempt to reset the franchise, that doesn’t appear likely to happen.

“We’re not tearing it down,” Flames GM Jay Feaster told ESPN.com on the phone from Calgary.

Whether or not Jay Bouwmeester remains a Flame remains to be seen. The Flames, according to rival executives, aren’t really shopping him as much as listening to offers.

If a deal doesn’t come along for Bouwmeester (two more seasons at $6.68 million per) that materially improves the team, my guess is that Feaster can live with a top four consisting of Bouwmeester, Wideman, Mark Giordano and Chris Butler. Not too shabby.

read on plus it looks like Matt Carle will go the UFA route too…

Poor plan.  Their top players only have a couple years left, they are not an attractive free agent destination, and they have few top level prospects.  In a few years they’ll be in the same spot as a Leafs…...a terrible collection of overpaid veterans and c-level prospects, with no top youngsters in sight.

Yeah I mean, why actively tear it down when it’s falling apart fine on its own?

Here’s the problem in Calgary.  They think they have and elite defenseman in Bouwmeester who is owed $13.2 million over the next 2 years.  Last year he scored 5 goals and was a minus 21.  He should he be moved or given away and if he isn’t, he should be buried in the minors so they have $6.6 million to use on other assets.

That’s just it though:  CGY would just find another way to waste that money and space.  Look at what they just paid Wideman…

The delusion in Calgary continues. I can only believe it is due to a meddling ownership and a blind worship of Iginla. This franchise is a disaster.
