No Mandatory Shields

The American League has made visors mandatory for all players starting this season, but for players in the NHL the wearing of visors remains a discretionary option. Under terms of the collective bargaining agreement, any rule concerning use of visors must be agreed upon by the NHLPA. “The majority of our members feel that wearing a visor is a matter of individual preference,” said Mike Gartner, director of hockey affairs for the NHLPA. That doesn’t mean the NHLPA thinks the majority opinion is necessarily correct.
