No Defense for Cooke From Pittsburgh

From Elliotte Friedman at CBC.ca:

Dan Bylsma is as measured and supportive as a coach gets in the NHL. For him to say, “I don’t think you can talk about eliminating headshots as an organization and not expect that to be examined,” well, it shows why Campbell doesn’t have to worry about Shero and Lemieux defending Cooke now.

They can’t.

No way Shero could ever go to another GM meeting arguing a no-tolerance head shot rule if he fought against a heavy suspension this time. He wouldn’t be taken seriously. And Lemieux loses all moral ground about safety if he fights for this player at this time.

The Penguins simply can’t trust Cooke, can’t depend on him. So they’ll accept Campbell’s challenge, stand back and await the decision.

Campbell’s been thrown a belt-high fastball. Now he’s got to crush it.

So Lets see If I got this straight ! They signed Cooke as a FA 2 Seasons ago & didn’t realize that he had a Penchant for Dirty Cheap shots whatever you want to call them? Then they had him on the team for 2 seasons & then resigned him for 3 seasons. And they didn’t realize his Penchant for Cheap shots, Dirty Hits ? BS Mario, Shero & Bylsma all knew his history & now they Just like The Crosby “Mild Concussion” fiasco are covering their Ass !!

I hope they suspend him for the season !! But Mario, Shero & Bylsma have got to get off their High Horse !!

Cooke’s actions prove beyond any dribble that may slip from his noisesome mouth, prove that he has no regard for his fellow players, his teammates, or even the league that employs him.

He is a stain on hockey that should be permanently eradicated.

That post need to be put in the KK hall of fame.

Evil, I’d like to take a small ounce of credit for battling you tooth and nail on this clown over the years.  But in the end, this is your own opinion and I’m glad to see that you’ve put down your sectaurs to acknowledge that this guy does the game a great amount of disservice.

Cooke’s actions in his first season and a half as a Penguins showed that he can play his game and be effective without being dirty. He endeared himself to the Penguins and the fans, and since about the midway of his second season with the Penguins his bullshit has slowly come back into an avalanche this season.

I don’t want to see Cooke suit up as a Penguins again, but his first season and a half as a Penguin he kept to playing hockey.

Obviously that doesn’t take into account his play as a Canuck, and the Penguins knowing that and signing him.

EvilPens good job on calling out those that knew better all along, used him and turned a blind eye because it served their purpose.  I hope the NHL takes a critical look at themselves as well since they helped justify his actions with lenient penalties. It is also time for the pundits that advocated that his hockey value outweighed his penchant for dangerous hits to take a look in the mirror too.  Reckless plays are too readily accepted if the player has any hockey value at all.

I don’t think the NHL should make a statement with Cooke because it will only be fleeting. They need to make a precedent instead, so that the punishment becomes severe and consistent. Statement suspensions have been used on goons in the past and have had little to no affect since the teams know it is really no punsihment at all.
