No Talking Allowed About The Vegas Golden Knights On Some Radio Stations In Las Vegas

from Ken Fang of Awful Announcing,

Las Vegas will be stepping into the major league sports realm in a short few months when the Las Vegas Golden Knights step onto the ice. But if you listen to the CBS Radio stations in the city, you wouldn’t even know they exist. It appears that the group which includes six stations has been ordered not to mention the team, not to discuss the team or even write about the team on the group’s websites and social media platforms.

The Golden Knights are preparing for their inaugural season in the NHL and have already awarded their TV and radio rights to AT&T SportsNet and Lotus Broadcasting respectively. But for CBS Radio, it’s as if the Golden Knights aren’t even playing. The cluster’s general manager Tony Perlongo spoke with KLAS-TV sports anchor Ron Futrell about this policy:

“We have a lot of other things to cover, the Knights don’t work into our coverage.”

That’s really unusual for a media outlet. I’ll be interested to see how this pans out.

On a side note, also, I appreciate they’ve come around to my way of thinking.

I remember a story that none of the local news shows in Dallas even mentioned the Stars when they played their inaugural game in Dallas after moving from Minnesota.

For those following, added to the post, CBS says they made a mistake.

Read:

“CBS Corporate called, directed us to give the new local nhl franchise air time, and issue an apology.”

It’s kinda too bad it went this way. I was interested to see how this would have progressed had they gone through with their plan to ignore the new nhl franchise.

Atlanta faced the same “blackout”. None of the local sports radio shows would allow discussion about the Thrashers except during after game segments and in their one run to the playoffs. And this was in sports radio’s infancy.

All they want to talk about around here is college football, 365 days a year. More effort went into covering Bulldogs spring practice than a Thrashers playoff game.

This was just many of the pieces that hurt the team. Not the biggest, by any means. I hope Vegas gets better support from the media.
