The coach also took a not-so-subtle shot at his leadership group for the sloppy performance in Friday’s 3-2 loss to Florida and the overall inconsistency during the current road trip.
“Preparation,” he said. “Leadership and preparation. Getting prepared to play the game in the National Hockey League. There’s no gimme games. You have to be prepared to work and play and if you’re not prepared to compete … the biggest thing for me was our competition level against St. Louis was where it had to be against a very good team.
“Our competition level against Detroit and against Florida was not near good enough. That’s what we have to get rid of in our game. The excuse of being young or the excuse of being on the road, or the excuse of it being a tough building, or this and that … we’re not interested in excuses. We’re interested in results.”
The Senators play in Tampa tonight.
