Nikitin Refuses To Learn The English Language

via RIA NOVOSTI,

Nikita Nikitin, a defenseman playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets  of the National Hockey League, has told R-Sport he refuses to learn English as he can always rely on fellow Russian teammates.

Nikitin has played in the NHL since 2010 but admitted – in Russian – that “my English isn’t getting any better.”

Russians in the NHL are regularly criticized for their perceived failure to adapt.

“You always hear Russian in the team, although because of that I should admit I don’t learn English,” he said. “I understand everything I need to, but I can still only speak with difficulty. But there are always guys around who give me prompts.”

There are three other Russians on the Columbus roster besides Nikitin: goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, defenseman Fedor Tyutin and forward Artem Anisimov.

Yup, this will do wonder for the Jackets drafting Russians.  Like Filatov and Zherdev alone weren’t enough reason to just think “Yeah, let that be someone else’s problem”.

What’s going to happen is Russians will play an even smaller role in the NHL long-term.  It’ll boost the KHL’s domestic marketability, but not really improve the league that much.  And honestly, I think the rise of other nations will make it so you almost don’t even notice how few Russians are in the NHL as years go on.

And then the KHL will collapse under the weight of trying to pay more of these guys than they are now.

I think you are correct.  I also think the best Russians will still be in the NHL.  The average to below average ones won’t be, and that’s really not such a bad thing.

I’m wondering if Commodore is learning Croatian playing for Zagreb in the KHL…

Doubtful. I see the point I think you’re making but it’s a bit different.  Playing in the KHL is clearly a last resort for him.  It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see him bounce from team to team over there and in a different language area soon.  English is the primary language of all but one NHL team and market is also fairly important.

That said; if he’s planning on staying over there I do think he totally should learn the languages (and the same goes for people living in any country that isn’t their own).
