Nichol Suspended Four Games

via Bob McKenzie tweet,

Four games for SJ’s Scott Nichol, as per TSN’s Gord Miller. Elbow on PHX’s Schlemko.

I’ve been looking for a video of this all morning, but no luck so far.

added 2:52pm,

TORONTO (January 18, 2011) – San Jose forward Scott Nichol has been suspended for four games and will forfeit $16,344.08 in salary for delivering a blow to the head of Phoenix Coyotes defenseman David Schlemko in NHL game #679 yesterday, the National Hockey League announced today.

Nichol’s fine is based on his average annual salary and is calculated under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 9:18 of the third period. No penalty was assessed on the play.  Schlemko was injured on the play and did not return in the game.

How this gets four games—compared to some other recent hits—is maybe the most appalling of all.  Good grief.  Maybe Nichol is a recent offender?  Can’t remember that, though.  Anyway, a somewhat dirty play, something of a cross check up high, but I don’t know.  One or two seems more appropriate in this case, not 2/3 of what Kostopolous got for the hit on Stuart.

Am I the only one who doesn’t have an issue with this hit?  It’s not blindside…keep your head up.  Charging, might have a case, but you’re responsible for the ice in front of your nose.

at most I see roughing.  he got his hands (and therefore some of his stick) up a bit high.  other than that it doesn’t look like anything that doesn’t happen 20 times every game.

but hey, maybe penalizing things like this as Rule 48 is the NHL’s idea about how to take head shots out of the game.  if you get a suspension for anything even close to a shot to the head, the players will take notice and it might just work.
