NHL Suspends Tyler Myers For Three Games

NEW YORK (March 13, 2012) – Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers has been suspended, without pay, for three games for boarding Montreal Canadiens forward Scott Gomez during NHL Game #1033 in Buffalo on Monday, March 12, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Myers will forfeit $14,189.19. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 13:11 of the third period. A minor penalty for boarding was assessed on the play.

Well, it seems that NHL supplemental discipline has once again become a joke. Perhaps 1 or 2 games was warranted, but given the numerous, similar plays that received absolutely no supplemental discipline whatsoever, three games is ridiculous. A quarter turn by Boychuk allows Malkin to board him in the same manner and not even receive a phone call, and yet Myers gets three games? Not to mention Bourdon’s hit on Gerbe where he skated half the width of the ice to hit Gerbe squarely in the back into the boards and concussing him, forcing him to miss multiple games, and for which there was no supplemental discipline either. And, of course, the most notable incident (for Buffalo, at least) of Lucic on Miller, for which Shanahan lent a sympathetic ear to Lucic’s BS story and let him away without even a fine. Should Myers have been disciplined for the hit? Absolutely, but be consistent about it, and with as many other hits that go without even as much as a slap on the wrist, three games seems excessive.

You can’t change what happend in the past, but I agree that the league needs to be more consistent. Tyler deserved the suspension. The only thing that ticks me off is he only gets 2 minutes for the hit. Then goes ahead and scores the winning goal in overtime. Meanwhile Gomez is sitting on the bench and not given the chance to score or help his team.(even though Gomez probably wouldn’t have helped anyway - ouch!!) Since the GM’s are meeting this week maybe they should look at giving harsher penalties for these idiotic hits from behind - 5 minutes or even a game mis-conduct. They would think twice the next time. Especially fif thier team has to play short-handed for 5 minutes.
