NHL Fails To Send Tough Message

Cole, one of hockey's best players this season, suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck after an overly aggressive blindside hit by Orpik. ...Hurricanes players and coaches were upset -- rightfully so -- that the league's front office didn't send down a tougher message. But Orpik could have received a lifetime NHL ban and there would be at least one cheap shot delivered somewhere around the league tonight. Roughhouse play and hockey have been joined at the hip almost from the beginning. For the majority of its existence, the NHL has allowed more outright fist-fighting than the other three major team sports leagues combined.
