The Toronto Sun's Mike Zeisberger spends most of his Saturday night notebook discussing a possible Penguins-Flames trade for Jarome Iginla and the league's super-tight standings (48 games instead of 82 have something to do with that) clogging up the trade rumor hotlines, but his conversation with NHL senior VP of hockey operations Mike Murphy is the gem of the column:

Mike Murphy finds it ironic when many teams complain to the league about opposing goalies using illegal equipment, a subject he expects to be brought up during the GM meetings in Toronto on Wednesday. “That’s all well and good,” Murphy, the NHL’s senior vice-president of hockey operations, said during an interview on Saturday night. “But when we say: ‘Ok, we’ll come and check your goalies too,’ you often hear, ‘No, you don’t have to do that.’ It’s like the dog chasing its own tail."

Murphy still likes the notion that the nets one day be made six inches higher to increase offence. “I know the traditionalists say it will alter all the records but if it makes the game more entertaining, isn’t that enough of a tradeoff,” Murphy said.

Know this: If you are frustrated by officials not dropping the puck on faceoffs, so is the league. It is an issue that is being addressed.
