CANUCKS MATCH BEST START IN CLUB HISTORY
Jacob Markstrom made 26 saves and Daniel Sedin (1-0—1) scored the eventual game-winning goal midway through the third period to help the Canucks match the best four-game start to a season in franchise history.

* At 4-0-0, the Canucks are the only team in the NHL without a loss of any kind. The club also won each of its first four games in 1992-93.

* Vancouver equaled the feat despite not holding a lead in regulation until Jannik Hansen (1-0—1) scored at 11:10 of the second period in Thursday’s game.

* D. Sedin, who has spent his entire career with the Canucks, notched his 79th career game-winning goal to extend his franchise record.

STANLEY CUP FINAL REMATCH FEATURES LATEST MULTI-GOAL COMEBACK
Trailing 2-0 entering the third period, Penguins forwards Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist each posted 1-1—2 to help Pittsburgh rally past San Jose in a rematch of the 2016 Stanley Cup Final.

* Elias notes that there have been 13 instances this season in which a team has overcome a multi-goal deficit to earn at least one point. The trailing team eventually won 10 of those 13 instances.

* In 2015-16, teams overcame a multi-goal deficit to earn at least a point 150 times, including 93 victories.

FAMILIAR FACES NET GAME-WINNERS
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin (1-0—1) – the franchise’s all-time leader in game-winning goals – and Kings defenseman Alec Martinez (1-1—2) – the overtime hero from the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs – each notched deciding goals on Thursday:

* Ovechkin scored his 90th career game-winning goal to lead Washington to its third straight win. Elias says that Ovechkin, who ranks third among active skaters with 527 career goals, became the 22nd player in NHL history to record 90 career decisive tallies. Only three active players have more such goals: Jagr (133), Jarome Iginla (97) and Patrick Marleau (93).

* Martinez scored 1:20 into the extra frame to help the Kings hold off the Stars – who scored three tying goals – and record their first win of 2016-17. Martinez, who scored a series-clinching overtime goal in both the 2014 Conference Finals and Stanley Cup Final, tallied the second regular-season overtime goal of his career (341 GP).

WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY STARS LEAD CLUBS TO VICTORY
Three members of Team Canada’s championship team from the World Cup of Hockey 2016 helped their clubs earn victories on Thursday, including two who made their 2016-17 NHL season debuts:

* Canadiens goaltender Carey Price – who went 5-0-0 at the World Cup of Hockey (1 SO, 1.40 GAA, .957 SV%) – made 27 saves in his first NHL appearance since Nov. 25, 2015 to help Montreal to move to 3-0-1 this season. Price improved to 8-0-0 in eight career appearances vs. ARI (1 SO, 1.49 GAA, .949 SV%).

* Bruins forwards Brad Marchand (1-1—2) and Patrice Bergeron (1-0—1) – who finished second and third in scoring, respectively, at the World Cup of Hockey – combined to rally Boston to victory in its home opener. Bergeron, who was playing in his first NHL game of the season, notched the winning goal with 75 seconds remaining in regulation.

RARE FIRST GOALS BY SOUTHERN-BORN PLAYERS
* Kings forward Nic Dowd (1-0—1), a seventh round selection (198th overall) in the 2009 NHL Draft, scored the first goal of his career (7 GP). Per Elias, Dowd (Huntsville, Ala.) became the second Alabama-born player in NHL history to score a goal; he joined Aud Tuten (Enterprise, Ala.), who scored four goals in 39 games over two seasons in 1941-42 and 1942-43.

* Coyotes defenseman Jakub Chychrun, the 16th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, scored his first career goal (2 GP). Elias notes that the native of Boca Raton, Fla., became the fifth Florida-born player to score an NHL goal, joining Dan Hinote (Leesburg, Fla.), Blake Geoffrion (Plantation, Fla.), Jayson Megna (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Shayne Gostisbehere (Pembroke Pines, Fla.).

LOOSE PUCKS
The Ducks ended their season-opening five-game road trip with their first victory, while the Hurricanes improved to 1-1-2 on their season-opening six-game trip . . . Defenseman Shea Weber (1-1—2), who was acquired from the Predators on June 29 in exchange for P.K. Subban, scored his first goal as a member of the Canadiens. Weber has 1-3—4 in four games w/ MTL . . . Sabres forward Nicholas Baptiste scored his first career goal (2 GP) . . . Sharks defenseman BrentBurns (3-6—9) and Oilers forward Jordan Eberle (3-3—6) each tallied an assist to extend their season-opening point streaks to five games . . . ICYMI: Wayne Gretzky signed copies of his new book at the NHL Powered by Reebok Store in New York . . . Penguins goaltender Matt Murraysigned a three-year contractextension . . . The NHL and NHLPA announced the launch of the NHL/NHLPA Core Development Program (CDP), which aims to help NHL players become better professionals both on and off of the ice . . . The Flyers raised a banner to honor late owner Ed Snider prior to their home opener for their 50th anniversary season . . . Bruins legends Bobby Orr and Milt Schmidt – who at 98 is the oldest living former NHL player – dropped the ceremonial puck before the club’s home opener.
