SHUTOUTS CARRY RANGERS, BLUES TO FRANCHISE RECORDS . . .
Goaltenders Henrik Lundqvist (NYR) and Jake Allen (STL) both posted shutouts to backstop their respective teams to the best 15-game starts in franchise history:

* Lundqvist stopped all 33 shots he faced to record his 56th career shutout – and first since Dec. 14, 2014 at EDM (16 SV) – and help the Rangers extend their point streak to 10 games (8-0-2), including six consecutive victories. At 11-2-2 (24 points), the Rangers equaled their best 15-game start to a season – in terms of wins and points – in the franchise’s 89-year history (also 1990-91: 11-4-0 and 1971-72: 10-1-4).

* The Rangers, who improved to 7-1-1 this season at Madison Square Garden, won for the 17th time in their last 18 meetings with the Hurricanes dating to Feb. 22, 2011 (CAR: 1-11-6), including seven consecutive victories. They also have won each of their last 10 home games against the Hurricanes dating to Jan. 5, 2011 (CAR: 0-7-3).

* Allen turned aside all 24 shots he faced to earn his eighth career shutout – and second in a row (also Nov. 7 at NSH: 45 SV) – and lead the Blues to their sixth victory in their past seven outings. At 11-3-1 (23 points), the Blues matched their best 15-game start to a season – in terms of wins – in the franchise’s 48-year history (4x, most recently 2013-14: 11-2-2).

* Allen, who registered consecutive shutouts for the second time in his career, extended his personal shutout streak to 165:59. Last season, he set a Blues rookie record with a shutout streak of 184:38 from Oct. 23 – Nov. 6, 2014. Allen has been the goaltender of record in each of the club’s past seven contests, compiling six wins in that span (0.88 GAA, .971 SV%, 3 SO).

. . . RED WINGS, AVALANCHE ALSO STOP THEM ALL
The Red Wings and Avalanche – who will meet in the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series at Coors Field in Denver on Saturday, Feb. 27 – also registered shutout victories on Tuesday:

* Petr Mrazek made 38 saves to earn his sixth career shutout (first this season) and backstop the Red Wings to their fourth win in their past five contests. Fifteen of those saves came against Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who equaled a career high for shots on goal set Oct. 7, 2006 vs. CAR.

* Andreas Athanasiou, who made his NHL debut on Sunday vs. DAL, scored his first goal (and first GWG). Per Elias, he became the fourth player in Red Wings history – and first in 66 years – to record his first NHL goal in a 1-0 victory. The others: Frank Fredrickson (Nov. 24, 1926 at CHI), Connie Brown (Jan. 26, 1939 at CHI) and Steve Black (Oct. 29, 1949 at MTL).

* Reto Berra stopped all 25 shots he faced to pick up his third career shutout (second this season) and help the Avalanche begin their season-long, seven-game road trip with a win. All three of Berra’s shutouts have come in his past six starts dating to last season (April 9 vs. WPG: 41 SV).

* Jarome Iginla scored 57 seconds after the opening face-off for what stood as the game-winning goal. His 95 career game-winning goals rank second among active players, behind only Jaromir Jagr (130).

DID YOU SEE THAT?
Thomas Vanek scored a pair of highlight-reel goals – on a breakaway slap shot and following a between-the-legs dangle – to power the Wild to their seventh win in eight games this season at Xcel Energy Center. Vanek registered his 51st career multi-goal performance (first this season) and 49th career game-winning goal (second this season, also Oct. 22 vs. CBJ).

DOWN, BUT NOT OUT
A pair of teams – the Predators and Canucks – scored three unanswered goals in the third period to rally for wins on Tuesday:

* Down 5-4 after 40 minutes, the Predators notched three consecutive goals – including the tiebreaker by Barret Jackman with 9:51 remaining in regulation – to outlast the Senators in the highest-scoring game of the season (NSH: 7, OTT: 5). Jackman, who collected his first goal in a Nashville uniform (13 GP), was one of four Predators defensemen to score – a first in franchise history (via Elias).

* Trailing 3-2 midway through the third period, the Canucks posted three unanswered goals – including the tiebreaker by Brandon Sutter with 5:18 remaining in regulation – to snap a three-game skid (0-2-1). The line of Jannik Hansen (1-3—4), Daniel Sedin (1-3—4) andHenrik Sedin (2-1—3) combined for 4-7—11, including both of the team’s other third-period goals.

FAMILIAR FACES HAUNT FORMER CLUBS
Several familiar faces led their new clubs to victories over their former teams on Tuesday:

* Thomas Greiss, a third-round selection (94th overall) by the Sharks in the 2004 NHL Draft, made 34 saves to help the Islanders rebound from a pair of losses. Greiss, who compiled a 17-16-3 record in 44 appearances with the Sharks, improved to 4-1-2 in his first seven outings with the Islanders (2.39 GAA, .927 SV%).

* Brad Richardson, who spent five seasons with the Kings (2008-13), scored the tiebreaking goal with 8:13 remaining in regulation to power the Coyotes to a 4-0-0 record this season in Southern California (2-0-0 at ANA and LAK). Richardson collected 24-41—65 during his tenure with the Kings (255 GP), helping the team win the Stanley Cup in 2012.

* Martin Havlat, who signed a one-year contract on Friday, registered the game-winning goal in his season debut to lift the Blues to their sixth victory in their past seven contests. Havlat played last season with the Devils, totaling 5-9—14 in 40 appearances. Scott Gomez, his teammate in 2014-15 (7-27—34 in 58 GP w/ NJD), earned the primary assist on Havlat’s goal.

THIS AND THAT
* Jack Eichel, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2015 NHL Draft, notched 1-1—2 to help the Sabres improve to 5-2-0 in their past seven outings. Eichel, who registered his second consecutive multi-point game (also Nov. 7 vs. VAN: 0-2—2), earned his first career road points (6 GP). His six overall goals are tied for third among rookies, one behind Max Domi(ARI) and Oscar Lindberg (NYR).

* Jake Gardiner, the 17th overall pick (by ANA) in the 2008 NHL Draft, scored the tiebreaking goal with 3:28 remaining in regulation to lift the Maple Leafs to a sweep of their two-game season series with the Stars. Gardiner recorded his second career game-winning goal and first since Jan. 21, 2014 at COL.

CANADIENS, PENGUINS TAKE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
The Canadiens, who at 13-2-1 (27 points) are off to the best 16-game start to a season in the franchise’s 98-year NHL history, look to continue their record-setting run when they visit the Penguins, winners of nine of their past 11 outings, at CONSOL Energy Center on NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Rivalry and Sportsnet’s Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey. This marks the second of three meetings in 2015-16 between these clubs; Montreal won their first encounter, 3-2 on Oct. 13 at PIT, behind a pair of goals from Max Pacioretty and the tiebreaking marker by Tomas Fleischmann at 5:20 of the third period. Pittsburgh, however, owns a 9-3-2 record in their last 14 matchups dating to the start of the 2011-12 season (MTL: 5-5-4). The Canadiens and Penguins will play for a third and final time on Jan. 9, their lone meeting of the season at Bell Centre.
